Most companies use a competent provider for their needs in team building. Tips on how to build a better team aren't usually something they are overly concerned with as they expect the experts to deal with that on company away days; this could be a mistake however.
Despite the effectiveness of Improving the performance of a team should be an ongoing effort with the occasional away day seen as a kind of extra boost towards this end. Here are a few team building tips that any company can benefit from.
- Value each member of your team. A team is only as strong as its weakest link and for this reason it is essential that each and every member of the team feels valued and important in the work they do, no matter how humble a task that may be. When a team member feels undervalued, or doesn't have a clear picture of what they are supposed to achieve, their work suffers. Pay attention to every worker. It will pay off!
- Be the kind of company that a team member wants to be part of. It's a sad fact that some 40% of workers on average feel completely disconnected from those who employ them. This doesn't have to be the case. Team members need to feel motivated and it is the job of the company management to see that this happens. Strong and positive leadership (as opposed to strong slave driving) can make that happen.
- Give team members a reason to feel motivated to achieving the company goals. Studies have shown that on average about 25% of workers only turn up to their place of work so that they can collect their wages at the end of the month. Every company should strive to find a way to turn that statistic around so that no worker has that negative attitude. There are many ways to do it and each company has to discover a way that works best for them.
- Team members can gain strong commitment to their work through a leader who is strongly committed to his or her work. The passion they bring to the work place can become infectious. When a leader is passionate about the work they do, team members will tend to follow. This situation tends to bring about a higher than expected number of team members becoming engaged in their work. This will practically guarantee higher production, greater efficiency and increased profits.
- Make certain that there is always good communication between team members and their management. Free flowing communication with a positive edge can avoid the "them and us" attitude that is so prevalent in many businesses. There will be disagreements from time to time, but if workers know that they can talk about any problems that might arise and iron out the differences, everything will go smoother and the company will have a happier and more efficient team.
There are many more team building tips that could be included. In fact, it's likely that an exhaustive list does not exist; team building is an ever ongoing task where new ways to motivate and encourage team members can always be found. And it all starts with good strong leadership.
