Real Team Building Activities are Inclusive and Bring Real BenefitsTeam building activities range from the fun and games type that have no lasting value and bring no real benefits, to the inclusive type that build on what the team does best and can produce amazing results with long lasting benefits for the company and for the team members too. So, how do you know which is which? It isn't always easy. You have to choose your team activities provider carefully. It's not all about happy away days with treasure hunts and obstacle races where the managers come down to worker level and prove they are human, while workers open up and display previously hidden initiatives. That's all well and good, but will it really produce benefits for all concerned? Probably not... That's why team building activities need to be properly thought out and properly tailored to a particular team's needs. Standard off-the-shelf type of activities may work in some cases, but there's no guarantee they will bring real benefits every time. Activities that are inclusive and that make sure that each team member understands his or her role and why they are there usually work best. The activities do not have to be similar to the actual work the team members do, but they should be structured in such a way that the team members can benefit in some real way. The best types of team building activities are those that allow the participants to relax to some degree. Highly competitive team games do not allow this to happen. There can only be one winner, and the losers will all feel that they are not good enough. That kind of activity does not build quality teams. It builds feelings of inadequacy and disappointment for those who did not win, as well as the feeling that they have failed. Team games need to be structured so that everyone on the team is pulling together for a common purpose towards a shared goal. That way everyone wins, even if the team fails in its objective. Everyone gains a unique understanding of the other team members through the close interaction in ways that don't happen in the work place. Workers who attend away days are usually more buoyant than usual. There's usually a feeling of expectancy. Managers relax to a degree and show themselves as human, while workers surprise everyone by displaying skills that no one suspected. When the activities start in earnest, each team member gains an insight into the thinking patterns and the working patterns of the others. They learn things that can be extremely valuable in the work place, and when the right situation arises at work, they use their new-found information by deploying it where it can impact positively for the company. Team building activities are a really strong tool when they are used properly. Used without understanding or purpose, they become just a silly game that may, or may not, be enjoyable, will be soon forgotten, and won't make the slightest difference to anything. Real team building activities are inclusive and bring real benefits. |
